American Beech, where do I begin with this album? It was written and recorded in 2018 during the biggest transition period of my life. My band, Ocean Forest, had just dissolved. A month prior to that, I found out I was going to be a father. I had just been laid off from my job for the Winter. The only sensible thing to do was to record an album! I dusted off my old Fostex 16-track recorder and went to work. No computers, no producers, no programming, no other musicians, just a terrified 28-year-old with some songs and a living-room full of instruments!

Once recording began, American Beech quickly transformed from a collection of songs, into an art project where every song would seamlessly flow into the next. American Beech covers a variety of genres. There’s the hard rock of “on & on”, brit-pop shimmer of “twofold”, experimental art-rock of “back again”, psychedelic-country of “right away” and just about every genre in between. Without the ability to punch-in and out, all instruments had to be recorded in one take. American Beech is lo-fi in nature and yes, that’s by design! It's the most challenging album I’ve recorded, but also the most rewarding! The stories of this album are told just as much through the instruments as through the lyrics. If you listen closely, they have an extremely vulnerable story to tell.
